It is 14 miles long, 450 feet wide and 35 feet deep, connecting the Delaware River with Chesapeake Bay and spanned by 6 bridges with hiking and biking trails along most of its shoreline. Originally built in the 1820s, today’s canal is electronically controlled and carries 40 percent of all ship traffic in and out of Baltimore.
